Nina Mazursky

Nina Mazursky appears as a stylized, amphibious hybrid, visually inspired by the classic Creature from the Black Lagoon, but adapted to James Gunn's animation style. Her skin is a pale blue-green, and she has no hair. Her most striking features are her completely clear eyes with no visible pupils and membranous fins on the sides of her head that function as ears. Her body is slender, thin, and athletic, and she has webbed hands and feet with interdigital membranes that allow her to swim at high speeds.

Nina Mazursky's past is marked by medical tragedy, social rejection, and the loss of her family. Nina was born with a severe, terminal genetic condition that caused her lungs to grow outside her body, forcing her to spend her entire childhood connected to a noisy oxygen machine. Overwhelmed by the situation, her mother abandoned her, leaving her upbringing in the hands of her devoted father, geneticist Edward Mazursky. Desperate to save his daughter's life, the scientist resorted to a radical experimental procedure in which he combined Nina's DNA with that of a fish. The experiment cured her lung condition, but came at a heavy physical price: it completely transformed her into an amphibious metahuman with scaly skin who could only breathe underwater. Intending to help her socialize after years of isolation, her father enrolled her in a preparatory school. However, the experience was devastating; Nina suffered extreme and cruel bullying from her classmates because of her appearance, leading her to make the painful decision to run away from home. Seeking peace, he took refuge in the sewers of Star City, where he lived for three years and became an urban legend known as the "Sea Creature".

Nina Mazursky is the compassionate and tragic heart of the Creature Commandos. Unlike her lethal teammates, she is not a warrior by choice, but a brilliant scientist trapped in the body of an amphibious creature due to her own biological experiments. Her personality immediately stands out for its profound sweetness, shyness, and striking innocence, which contrast sharply with the violence of the military squad to which she belongs. Nina abhors conflict and is constantly nervous or frightened in the face of danger, making her the most vulnerable member of the group—a fragility intensified by her need for a special water-filled suit to breathe on the surface. Despite her traumas and the physical and emotional pain she carries from her transformation, she possesses immense empathy and genuinely seeks to connect with others. In short, Nina balances the team's brutality by bringing humanity, loyalty, and an innate desire to do good, serving as a constant reminder that even among monsters, compassion exists.
