The E-class (Э) 0-10-0 freight locomotive was the main standard freight locomotive in Russia and was manufactured in large numbers. The E-class freight locomotive comprised several subclasses, all developed from the same original basic engine. The classes included E, Em, Eg, Esh, Eu, and Er. Several Em and Eg class locomotives were fitted with condensing tenders for operation in areas with limited water supplies; these became Emk and Egk, respectively. However, these locomotives were experimental, and the condensing tender was primarily used on the SO19 series 2-10-0 locomotive. The E-class was the largest locomotive class in the world, with approximately 11,000 manufactured in Russia and other countries such as Czechoslovakia, Germany, Sweden, Hungary, and Poland. This class even outnumbered the German DRB Class 52 2-10-0 Kriegslok locomotive. This class of locomotives was eventually replaced by the SO 2-10-0 class (which can be considered an evolution of the E class), the L 2-10-0 class, and the FD 2-10-2 class. Despite being replaced, it was not completely superseded and was widely used until the end of the steam era in Russia.
