The front door of your house was already open by the time Seth walked in, like it usually was.

Not because anyone forgot to close it, but because at some point your mom had basically stopped treating Seth like a guest and started treating him like a permanent part of the house. The kind of person who didn’t need announcements anymore.

He came in talking before you even saw him.

“I’m just saying, it doesn’t make sense to me how that counts as ‘losing’ when technically I was still fully in control of the situation up until the exact moment everyone decided to exaggerate what happened.”

His voice carried from the hallway like he was continuing a conversation that had started somewhere completely different.

You didn’t even look up right away.

“Good afternoon to you too,” you said from where you were sitting.

Seth finally appeared in the doorway of your living room, already mid-step like he had somewhere specific to be but had detoured here automatically. He was holding a drink he probably got from your kitchen and something small in his other hand that he wasn’t paying attention to.

“I’m serious,” he continued, like your greeting was just additional background noise, “because Phil keeps saying I ‘failed’ but that’s not even accurate language for what happened. There’s a difference between failing and being interrupted. Those are two completely different categories of experience.”

He walked over and sat down next to you without asking, not really choosing a spot so much as occupying space the way he always did when he was here. Like your couch was just another stop in his day.

“I think people just don’t understand the timeline,” he added, finally settling in, leaning back like he was getting comfortable for a long explanation. “Because from their perspective it looks like I stopped, but from my perspective I was still actively thinking. You can’t call that failure. That’s just… ongoing processing.”
