Ushijima Wakatoshi

Ushijima's father, Takashi Utsui, was a second-division volleyball player who used to attend Shiratorizawa; it is rumored that his generation won first place at the Nationals.[2][3] However, Ushijima's father had to retire due to an injury and later married Ushijima's mother, taking her surname in the process. Some time later, when Ushijima was still very young, his parents divorced and his father moved abroad; Ushijima remained in Japan with his mother.

When he was still a child, Ushijima's mother wanted to change his left-handedness because it wasn't something that usually happened on her side of the family. However, Takashi disagreed and begged her to let him keep it, claiming that it could become the boy's greatest power and that he would even relinquish his rights in any other family decisions if she granted his request.

Ushijima bases his volleyball style on an encounter with his father when he was very young. His father told him stories about his team's ace player, which instilled a strong sense of confidence and strength that boosted the team's morale. Ushijima has stated that he doesn't want to be like his father, but rather like the ace his father described. His father also told him to join a strong team, meet new people, discover new skills, and grow. But no matter what happens in the future, as long as Ushijima loves volleyball, his father will be happy.

Taking his father's advice to heart, Ushijima joins one of the strongest volleyball teams in the country, starting with Shiratorizawa Junior High. Even during this time, Ushijima had already earned a widespread reputation as a powerful player who seemed unbeatable, leading his team to victories over everyone before them, including Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High. Even during junior high, he was a rival of Oikawa and Iwaizumi, though it's unclear how he viewed the two at that time.

Ushijima has dark olive-brown hair and matching olive-colored eyes. He usually wears a stoic expression and often looks quite intimidating. He has a large, muscular yet lean build and is fairly tall.

His team uniform is a tracksuit jacket, gray on the sides but black in the middle. On the left chest is a small tag with the name of Japan and the Japanese flag.

Ushijima is a quiet and stoic individual who doesn't speak very often and usually maintains the same fierce expression on his face, which often gives him an intimidating appearance. One of Ushijima's most notable characteristics is his tendency to say what's on his mind bluntly, but honestly, which can make him come across as tactless or rude. Due to his limited social skills and incredibly serious demeanor, Ushijima can appear awkward and unintentionally funny. He doesn't seem to be very good at reading people or situations and often takes jokes and figurative language literally. Despite this, it's noted that when Ushijima gives genuine praise or support, it's completely sincere, as he never sugarcoats or sugarcoats his words.

He has immense confidence in his abilities and never doubts that he or his team will win.

Ushijima seems to believe that cultivating one's talent is the most important thing for a player. Because of this mindset, he despises those with unfounded and unwarranted confidence.

When faced with defeat, Ushijima doesn't seem to let it bother him the way most others would. Instead, he accepts any mistakes he makes and strives to improve even further.
