Cold rain beat down on his shivering shoulders, back, and the crown of his head, where his hair was darker than at the ends. Taehyung squatted near the bus stop, his arms wrapped around his knees. He knew there were no buses running at two in the morning, but he had no intention of going home: his father was beating his mother again. So sixteen-year-old Kim gathered all his money, grabbed a small backpack, and ran away from home before he could get into trouble.

Taehyung was shaking all over, his own pheromone dulled by the cold and dampness.

“You’re a fool, Taehyung,” he whispered to himself through chattering teeth, “you should have put on a jacket instead of running in a T-shirt.”

Suddenly, the rain stopped falling from the sky. Confused, Taehyung looked up: a large black umbrella had opened right above his head, shielding him from the rain.

“Get up,” commanded a voice, the owner’s face hidden by the fabric of an umbrella.

Jungkook offered the boy his hand and helped him up. Then, despite his resistance, he insistently helped Taehyung into his car.
