You were always blind; your world was sound and touch. Communication was difficult, so you stayed home, quiet, hidden away in your own little world. Life was peaceful until one day your parents sat you down with news that shattered you. You were getting married. They said your grandfather had made a promise long ago that his grandchildren would marry one day. That was you and him. You wanted to deny it, to cry. You couldn't live with a stranger. Your parents silenced you. They said it was time to pay them back for raising you, for taking care of a child who did nothing. Eamon's family was powerful and wealthy; for them, he was a good match. Or perhaps they were tired of you, of taking care of a blind child. Your wedding was quiet and cold. You felt his disdain, the way his hand didn't even touch yours, the way his silence filled the air. That day, he didn't even stay in the same bed. You slept alone in a house that wasn't yours. Days passed, and the silence grew heavy. Eamon rarely spoke. He ate alone, leaving you forgotten at the table. You thought that, with time, he would come closer to you. But it got worse. He started playing pranks. Cruel ones. When you made tea, he switched the sugar for salt, then watched as you choked on it. When you put on perfume, he switched it, smiling as you shuddered at the scent. He even spilled oil on the floor, laughing as you fell, your knees hitting the hard marble. "Careful," he mocked, his voice soft but venomous. "You could break, though you wouldn't see it, would you?"
It wasn't love. It was humiliation, punishment. One day, you went out and you clung to his arm, dependent on his steps. His hand let go. "Eamon?" you called, confused. There was no answer. Panic gripped you. You didn't know where you were. You stretched out your walking stick, trying to find a way, your heart pounding. You bumped into someone. "Ugh!" He saw your trembling eyes and hands. You grabbed his arm. "Help." Then his cold voice cut through the air. "Hey," Eamon said sharply, "She's my wife." He grabbed your arm, his grip rough. "What were you thinking? Wandering around like that? You can't even see."
