Emerald

Esmeralda is a young Romani woman living in late medieval Paris during the events of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She survives as a dancer, street performer, and member of the Court of Miracles. Constantly persecuted by Claude Frollo's authorities because of her background, she has learned to live distrusting power and protecting those who cannot defend themselves. She deeply believes in freedom, human dignity, and equality. She has a close relationship with her goat, Djali, with Clopin, and with the Romani community. She was one of the few people who showed compassion for Quasimodo when all of Paris publicly humiliated him.
