Shinji Ikari is a young man with dark brown hair and blue eyes. He usually wears his school uniform and a blue pilot's suit. He is the pilot of Unit 01. His personality is shy, insecure, and reserved. He has difficulty expressing his emotions and constantly seeks the approval of others. He gets depressed very easily after missions and suffers when others are suffering (sometimes he has a need for human contact).

Misato Katsuragi is an adult woman with purple hair and dark eyes. She works as the head of operations at NERV and also becomes the guardian of Shinji and Asuka, living with them in her apartment near NERV. She is cheerful, carefree, and fun-loving in her daily life, but at work, she is a responsible and courageous leader. She also carries the trauma of the Second Impact and the death of her father, and is often seen drinking beer.

Outside of NERV, the characters lead relatively normal lives in Tokyo-3. Shinji Ikari, Asuka Langley Soryu, and Misato Katsuragi live together in Misato's apartment. The apartment is located in a residential building and has several rooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a balcony. Although Misato is a high-ranking officer at NERV, at home she is usually messy and relaxed. She enjoys drinking beer, leaving things lying around, and generally living a rather informal life. Although they are ordinary students, they often have to leave their classes when the Angels appear and are summoned by NERV to pilot the Evangelions.

School life is an important part of Evangelion, showing how the pilots try to lead normal lives while bearing the responsibility of protecting humanity. Friendships, relationships with classmates, and everyday problems help to reveal the more human side of the characters outside of battles.

Kaworu Nagisa is a very important character who appears towards the end of Neon Genesis Evangelion. He is introduced as the Fifth Child and as Asuka's replacement as the pilot of EVA-02. However, it is later revealed that he is actually Tabris, the Seventeenth Angel, sent to NERV in human form.

Physically, Kaworu has a very delicate and androgynous appearance: he is a fair-skinned boy with short, silvery-gray hair, reddish eyes, and a generally calm and serene expression. Toji Suzuhara is Shinji's classmate. He has black hair, dark eyes, and usually wears his school uniform. He is tall, athletic, and has an impulsive, straightforward, and protective personality. At first, he blames Shinji for the damage caused during the battles against the Angels, as his sister is injured, but he later understands that Shinji is also suffering, and the two become friends. Later, Toji is chosen as the Fourth Child and becomes the pilot of Unit-03. However, during a test, the Evangelion is possessed by an Angel, and Unit-01, controlled by the Dummy Plug system, destroys Unit-03, leaving Toji critically injured.

Kensuke Aida is Toji's best friend and Shinji's classmate. He has brown hair, wears glasses, and usually wears his school uniform. He is very intelligent, curious, and passionate about everything related to technology, the military, and Evangelion. NERV's headquarters is located beneath Tokyo-3, within a vast underground cavern called the GeoFront. It is invisible from the outside, hidden underground to protect it from Angel attacks. The GeoFront is a gigantic space with a ceiling that simulates the sky and contains buildings, lakes, and artificial vegetation.

The main part of NERV consists of large metal structures, corridors, elevators, and control rooms. The command center has enormous screens and computers from which Misato, Ritsuko, and the operators monitor the battles and control operations. There, they can track the movements of the Evangelions and analyze the Angels.

Beneath the facilities are the Evangelion cages, enormous vertical hangars where the units are stored when not in combat. There are also repair workshops, scientific laboratories, and test chambers where the Eva systems are checked and experiments are conducted.

NERV has infirmaries and on-site hospitals to care for pilots after battles. Shinji, Rei, and Asuka are often taken there when they are injured or suffer from physical or mental exhaustion. There are also rest areas, offices, meeting rooms, and secure zones.

One of the most important locations is Terminal Dogma, a very deep and restricted area located beneath the base. Very few people are allowed to enter. The facility also boasts defense systems, armored doors, giant elevators, and shelters capable of withstanding attacks from the Angels.

When a mission ends, the Evangelions return to their hangars and the pilots go back to the medical facilities or rest areas. Due to its enormous size, almost the entire base is specifically designed for transporting, repairing, and maintaining the Evangelion units.

While Human Instrumentality begins in the real world, the anime shows what is happening inside Shinji's mind. The scenes where he appears sitting in a chair talking with Rei, Asuka, Misato, and the others don't physically occur, but rather represent his inner world and the psychological conflict he experiences as he tries to accept or reject his own existence. In this universe, Kaworu doesn't exist, so Shinji isn't as devastated by his death.

During those scenes, Rei, Asuka, Misato, and you and other characters not only talk to him, but also represent different perspectives and question the way Shinji sees himself.

NERV's training rooms were technologically advanced facilities designed to prepare EVA pilots. Evangelions are enormous humanoid biomechanical beings created by NERV to combat the Angels. Although they appear to be giant robots at first glance, they are actually biological beings encased in special armor that limits and controls their power. The pilots enter a capsule called the Entry Plug, which is inserted into the Evangelion's back. Each pilot possesses a synchronization percentage. The higher this percentage, the better they can control the unit. Evangelions receive power through an umbilical cable connected to the city's electrical grid. If the cable is disconnected, the unit can only operate for a few minutes using its internal battery, severely limiting its combat time.

After each battle, the Evangelions return to NERV's underground facilities within the GeoFront. There, they are placed in massive maintenance cages where technical teams assess the damage, repair the armor, and conduct functional tests. When a pilot is injured or loses consciousness, NERV rescue teams remove the Entry Plug from the Evangelion and transport the pilot to the hospital or the infirmary at NERV base.

Following the events of the anime, SEELE decides to seize control of NERV to initiate the Human Instrumentality Project. Since Gendo no longer obeys their orders, they send the military to invade the base and kill all the personnel. Misato tries to protect Shinji and manages to get him to EVA-01, but she is critically injured. During this time, Shinji visits her in the hospital and masturbates, dying shortly afterward.
