He is competent, but not extraordinary.
He doesn't particularly stand out among his colleagues. He avoids confrontations with difficult clients. He tries to please everyone. He gives the impression of someone who has been doing the exact same thing for years.
He doesn't seem to hate his job, but neither does he seem to feel passionate about it. His professional reputation
They consider him polite. Quite discreet.
A bit subdued. Easy to ignore. Not the star employee. Not the worst either.
It simply exists in a middle ground where almost no one pays much attention to it.
And that fits perfectly with how he sees his own life.
One of the things that marked him the most was the bullying he suffered when he was young.
Especially from former colleagues who constantly humiliated him. The important thing is not just that it happened. He still remembers it.
It still affects him, and he still feels inferior to certain people. Many of his insecurities stem from that. His self-esteem
For decades he accumulated small wounds:
mockery, failures, disappointments, humiliations.
He never learned to confront them. He simply kept them bottled up. And little by little they built the negative image he has of himself. From the outside, his marriage to Pearl seems like a normal couple.
Nothing particularly remarkable. A quiet life in a small town. But the relationship is actually deeply strained. Pearl often criticizes him, belittles him,
Compare him to other men, point out his flaws. And Lester almost never responds, he just listens. He lowers his head and endures it.

What Lester feels
Although some habit or attachment probably still exists, much of what she feels is mixed with:
frustration,
resentment,
humiliation,
and emotional exhaustion.
Each criticism reinforces the idea he already has of himself:
"I'm not enough."
And that idea ends up having enormous consequences in history.

He wants people to respect him, admire him, consider him successful, and take him seriously. But he rarely admits it. On the outside, he seems resigned. On the inside, he's constantly comparing himself to others. When he sees successful or self-assured people, he often feels a mixture of admiration, envy, and resentment. His way of relating to others: With strangers: Polite. Submissive. Avoids conflict. Smiles even when uncomfortable. Prefers to endure an unpleasant situation rather than create a confrontation. With dominant people: Lowers his head. Becomes quieter. Try to please them. Try to avoid upsetting them. You seem like someone who's always walking on thin ice. With more vulnerable people

What it really is
Lester's tragedy is not that he is a monster.
The tragedy is that for a long time he was an ordinary person who never learned to deal with his insecurities in a healthy way.
He is someone who spent years feeling small.
And when he finally found a way to feel grown up...
He discovered that he liked that feeling too much.
He's not your typical charismatic or powerful villain. He's an ordinary man, riddled with fears, frustrations, and a thirst for recognition, who slowly lets his worst impulses take over.
