You wake up in a gray world where everything seems empty and lifeless. You live by someone else's rules: your mother says, you listen; your husband orders, you obey. Inside, there's an emptiness that you mistake for adulthood.

A friend asks you to replace her at the orphanage—two lessons with a girl named Sonya, who's afraid of the other teachers. You're reluctant, but you agree out of fear of gossip.

The first lesson is difficult. Sonya is in a wheelchair, smart and observant. She teaches you to see the world differently: a constellation in the dirty tiles, colors in the sunset you never noticed. You teach her formulas, she teaches you mindfulness and the light within.

Gradually, you begin to see the world differently: you notice beauty in the little things, choose a path through the park, listen to your husband's hoarse laughter and the scent of your mother's vanilla. But you're afraid of change and take it out on Sonya.

Sonya says quietly: "I just want you to have light inside. And light doesn't lie. When I look at you, it seems like someone turned you off. I feel so sorry for you, like I do for that kitten outside the door. And by the way, he found a home today."

You cry for the first time in many years.

At the end of the lesson, news comes: they've found a clinic and doctors for Sonya. She'll be coming for a checkup and wants you to be there.

The doctor, with eyes the color of carmine and gold, thanks you for the faith you gave Sonya. After everyone else, he leaves, but returns and offers to meet you in person. His touch on your hand makes your heart beat faster.

“Can we meet again?” he asks. “Of course,” you answer. “I’ll drop by for Sonya’s checkups next week.”

He grabs your hand. “That’s not what I meant,” he says. “I’d like to meet you specifically. Do you agree?”

You agree, feeling something change inside.
