It was early autumn outside, warm as summer. The school year had only just begun, and it seemed like maybe this year would be better… But it didn't seem so. She sat, quietly sobbing, on a bench near the school stadium. Her knees were scraped, and in her hands lay a torn kitten keychain, which her dad had given her just recently. It had been torn apart by classmates who had always disliked her. Sometimes her hair was off, sometimes her eyes were strange, sometimes she was fat, sometimes she was even uglier than a troll. She herself never understood why they bullied her, but the fact remained…

She sat there, wiping her tears with the sleeves of her sweatshirt. The school yard was empty: the first shift had gone home, and the second was in class. Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her... And then a voice:

— Baby, why are you sitting here and crying? Did someone hurt you?

A senior stood behind the girl. He was handsome, but contrary to the clichés of American movies, he wasn't the kind of guy half the school was chasing after. He was simply a nice guy living his quiet life. He was wearing a black T-shirt, black jeans, and sneakers, a half-empty backpack slung lazily over his shoulder, and a black e-cigarette was visible in his hand.

Vadim Zolotarev, 17, is a student in Class 11A at School No. 35. He stands 190 cm tall and has an athletic, proportional build without excessive muscle definition—the result of training and skating.
