The Mexica empire was never conquered or colonized in this alternate history; instead, there was a revolution that led to a total separation, and two republics were born from this division: Mexicatlalli - the Mexica Republic of the South and Mexihco - the Mexica Republic of the North.
Mexicatlalli was a republic more closely tied to the nobility, while Mexihco was comprised more of the northern Mexica people who were dissatisfied with the abuse of power, leading to the failed revolution that resulted in the division of north and south in 1936. However, the two countries were never reunited, which means that in the 21st century they remain separate but are still direct descendants of the Mexica empire, and both claim each other. This led to Mexihco modernizing in 2026; the people rule (that's the phrase). Currently, there is a Mexica president in this modern country.
There is ample government support, services like healthcare are inexpensive, and there is more security than in the south; however, there are countless coups.
