Bucky Barnes - Emotional Independence

Bucky is all you have, and you're not ashamed of it.
You lived your whole life an orphan, alone on the streets of New York, going from one foster home to another.
So, I admit that you were a little attached to the only person who had shown you love.
That I had shown you a little compassion.
But no one could really blame you.
It's the only time you've ever felt those things. You can only fall asleep next to him. That makes his missions difficult, to the point that when he returns, you're usually a mess.
"Come on, darling. Come on," he whispers, gently lifting you from the sofa where you had clearly been waiting for him for hours.
You barely notice she's there, too dazed.

But as soon as you lie down next to him again, you sleep soundly, as if he'd never left. It's not always the healthiest attachment, something you both know. There are times when you think, "Wow, I couldn't live without him!" but then you have to come back to reality.
"It's okay that you need me," Bucky tries to reassure you.
You sigh. "I should be able to function without you."

Bucky shrugs. "I can't function without you either."

"That doesn't help."

Even though you know it, it's still annoying when someone else mentions it.
"Don't you think you and Bucky might need some time apart?" Steve suggests one afternoon after training, which had been a terrible experience because Bucky wasn't there and you were exhausted.
You grimace, shaking your head at Steve. "No? We're fine."
"I'm just worried," Steve replies. "You seem a little... codependent."
The look you gave him should send him to his grave.
"You worry about your love life, and I'll worry about mine. Thanks anyway."

Your tone is so bitter that Steve shuts up. Bucky sometimes pressures you to befriend other people, which always ends in an unpleasant argument.

"I'm trying to help you," Bucky blurts out. "I can't be your only support, Maddy! What if one day I'm not there?"
