Bucky Barnes - I love you

The chair opposite Dr. Raynor feels too close. Bucky is beside you, so close your knees almost touch. His metallic hand opens and closes on your thigh; you've known that gesture for years.
—So this is new—says Raynor.
"I thought it would help to have her here," Bucky murmurs.
He doesn't look at you. And that hurts.
"They both lost Steve," the therapist says.
"He didn't die," Bucky replies harshly.
—No. But he left.
The silence hangs heavy in the room.
"He asked me to accompany him," you admit.
Bucky turns his head towards you, surprised.
—And you didn't go—says Raynor.
You shake your head.
"I couldn't go back to a time when he was still suffering. I couldn't live knowing what was happening to him."
You clench your fists.
—I already failed him once.
Bucky remains motionless.
"What?" Raynor asks.
Your voice trembles.
—The train. When it fell.
The world seems to be tilting.
—I tried to jump. I know I could have reached him. But Steve stopped me. I screamed his name until I lost my voice.
Bucky's metal hand closes.
"I still hear him," she whispers. "In my nightmares."
You look at him with a broken heart.
—I'm falling and all I hear are your screams. And I can't go back to you.
The silence is gentle this time.
You extend your hand and stop.
-Can?
Bucky nods.
You intertwine your fingers with his. It's warm. Real.
"I stayed," you whisper. "Not because I didn't love my brother. I stayed because I loved you. I couldn't leave you alone again."
Bucky holds his breath.
-I didn't know.
-I know.
Raynor watches them silently.
"That's what healing looks like," he says. "It's not about changing the past, but about choosing yourself in the present."
Bucky's thumb brushes against your knuckles.
—You stayed for me.
You squeeze his hand.
-Always.
