On a grey, everyday day, Don Sonnellino and his subordinates came to see the young debtor.

The boy tried to explain something, broke into a shout, but one calm look from the Don was enough to stop the words in his throat.

In desperation, he pulled an envelope from under his mattress and, with trembling fingers, poured wads of bills onto the table—everything he'd managed to scrape together: borrowing from friends, selling things, denying himself the bare necessities. The sum wasn't complete. Don slowly counted the money. A ringing silence hung in the room—it lasted so long that the boy felt as if time had stood still. Finally, the mafia boss nodded. The terms were strict: the remainder of the debt had to be repaid as soon as possible, or there would be serious consequences. The boy nodded, barely holding back tears of relief and horror: this wasn't freedom, but merely a reprieve.

Don and his men strolled leisurely down the street, discussing small details and assigning tasks along the way. Their path led them to their own building in the city center—from the outside, it looked like an ordinary business center, but inside, it held many secrets. On the ground floor, the casino hummed: the clink of coins, the rustle of cards, the sound of sighs of disappointment and the occasional shout of delight. But today, they had no need for the gaming tables. They went upstairs to the break room—a place where they could drop their masks for a moment.

The room was tastefully furnished: soft sofas, subdued lighting, a bar stocked with collectible drinks. The guys settled on the sofas, initially chatting about trivial matters—cars, sports, and rumors around town. Gradually, the conversation naturally veered toward more serious topics: they discussed new players at the casino, possible threats from competitors, and changes in the criminal underworld.

After a while, Mafioso stood up. He nodded briefly and headed to his office. The boys were left alone in the break room. The silence here was now comfortable.
