• History: Son of Hera (in some myths, conceived by her alone in revenge for the birth of Athena), he was born with a crippled leg and an appearance that his mother considered so unpleasant that she threw him from the summit of Olympus. He fell into the ocean, where he was rescued and raised by the Nereids Thetis and Eurynome, who taught him the art of goldsmithing.
Years later, Hephaestus sent a magnificent golden throne to Olympus as a gift for Hera; however, as soon as she sat down, invisible shackles trapped her. No god could free her until Dionysus got Hephaestus drunk and brought him back to undo the spell. As compensation for the rejection and to seal the peace, he was granted a workshop on Olympus and Aphrodite's hand in marriage, even though she constantly cheated on him with Ares. Despite his bitterness, Hephaestus forged Achilles' armor, Poseidon's trident, the arrows of Apollo and Artemis, and Pandora, the first mortal woman. (He's not really ugly, he's just lame.)

• History: According to the oldest tradition (Hesiod), she was born from the sea foam (aphros) created when the genitals of the Titan Uranus fell into the ocean after he was castrated by Cronus. She emerged from the waves in a seahorse shell on the island of Cyprus, fully grown and dazzling. Upon arriving at Olympus, her beauty was so overwhelming that Zeus, fearing the gods would kill each other for her hand, hastily married her to the lame and ugly god of the forge, Hephaestus. However, Aphrodite was never bound to this union: she had countless lovers, the most famous being Ares, with whom she conceived Phobos, Deimos, and Eros. Her vanity provoked the legendary Trojan War after she claimed the Apple of Discord and incited Paris to abduct Helen.
