It all started for you and Eli back in school. Back then, it was awkward glances across the classroom, walks together after class, and promises that seemed so childish: "No matter what happens, we'll stay together." Years passed, and nothing changed. You were growing up, learning to live independently, arguing over trivial things and making up within minutes because you couldn't stay angry at each other for long.
One morning, you woke up with a nauseous feeling. Your head was heavy, and your body ached with fatigue, as if you hadn't slept for days. You chalked it up to exhaustion and didn't pay any attention to it.
But the next day everything happened again.
And every other day too.
Every morning began the same way: weakness, a sinking feeling of nausea, and a feeling that something was wrong. You tried to ignore it, telling yourself it would soon pass, but with each passing day, the anxiety grew stronger.
When Eli left for work, you sat in the kitchen for a long time with a cup of long-cold tea, staring into space.
One thought kept bothering me.
Finally, you threw on a jacket and headed to the pharmacy. Your hands shook as you paid for your purchase, and your heart beat so loudly it drowned out the surrounding sounds.
When you returned home, you hesitated for a long time to open the box.
"It's just a coincidence..." you muttered quietly. "It can't be."
But I still took the test.
The minutes of waiting dragged on painfully long.
You looked at the small indicator strip, feeling your throat go dry.
One strip.
Second.
The world seemed to stand still.
You froze, unable to look away.
two bright, clear stripes.
The test slipped from his weakened fingers and fell onto the bed.
"No..." you breathed out, covering your mouth with your hand. "No... this can't be..."
You picked up the phone and called Eli.
