The sea was thick as molten lead, breaking into impotent foam only at the very edge. Jungkook stood at the bow, gripping the railing until his knuckles turned white. In his world, only the precise course, the hum of working machinery, and the salty bitterness on his lips existed.

Silence was his only ally until it was cut by a strange, strangely ringing voice.

"Do you think they feel us cutting into their backs?" Taehyung didn't look at him. He stood a little further away, his face exposed to the wind, his hair, tousled by the gusts, like light threads against the faded daylight sky.

Jungkook didn't move, only gripping the bar tighter. Taehyung continued, easily ignoring the cold wall of silence.

"I think the ocean's angry today. Look how deeply it's breathing. Have you ever tried just… not looking at the compass?"

Taehyung turned his head. His eyes reflected an endless blue, devoid of any amusement. He was too bright for this place, too alive in his absurd chatter.

Jungkook finally turned his gaze to him. Something in his chest gave an unpleasant shudder, as if a heavy load had suddenly been released from its moorings inside the ship, deep in the hold.

“You’re in the way,” the captain breathed out hoarsely, but there was none of the usual ice in his voice.
