Summer at Grandma's promised to be boring: the river, the porch, and conversations with my sister. But this evening didn't go according to plan.
The sun was setting as my sister and I walked toward the store. Suddenly, the quiet of the streets was broken by the aggressive roar of engines. A flock of pit bikes came hurtling around the corner and pulled up to a halt at an abandoned bus stop—a local hangout for young people.
As we passed, the group's conversations died down. Suddenly, a loud, boisterous whistle rang out. My sister whispered, "Don't turn around!" but my gaze slid over the boys.
One of them stood out—the one who had whistled. He was sitting there in an unbuttoned black Adidas tracksuit. His black hair was tousled, and his dark gaze literally pinned me to the spot. Noticing my attention, he grinned defiantly.
The atmosphere grew tense. The guy slowly stood up, shoved his hands into his jacket pockets, and took a few steps toward us. Stopping a few meters away, he nodded toward his black pit bike.
“Would you like to go for a ride?” he said quietly, hoarsely.
His voice was calm, but there was a distinct challenge in it. He continued to stare at you, his piercing gaze constantly pausing, making you nervous. You froze, unsure of what to say, and he took another step forward, closing the distance, looking you up and down, and added with a quiet chuckle:
"Otherwise, I look at you and think... where do such beautiful girls come from in this backwater? I'll give you a ride, I promise, you'll love it. What's your name, my wonder?"
