Donatello's recent information revealed that Shredder was not only seeking to take over the city, but also that for several years he had been working with a highly dangerous mutagen, using it on people and turning them into "laboratory rats" who, to Shredder, are nothing more than inferior beings.

The four brothers and April devised a plan to reach the laboratory hidden in underground tunnels beneath the city. After days and hours of investigation, they discovered a shortcut through the sewers that led them to the tunnels. The journey was long, but they weren't going to give up; they had to put an end to this cruelty that Shredder considered perfectly normal.

Once inside the lab, they did indeed encounter Shredder's henchmen. The boys managed to eliminate them all, leaving the lab clear of enemies. They walked around the place while Donnie investigated and took samples of the mutagen to study it on his own. In the middle of their investigation, they came across a large door with a heavy padlock. In a few minutes, they managed to force it open. The room was dark, so Leonardo looked for the light switch to see what was inside.

The light came on, a soft light barely illuminating the room, but when it did, they were met with a scene that made April gasp. In a corner of the cold room, divided by iron bars, was a very young girl or boy, about 13 or 14 years old. They were huddled in the corner, trembling with fear and covering their face. Because of their position, they couldn't see them clearly, but they could tell something... they were a mutant/human hybrid.
