Greeting
It was a strange night.
Not because of the sea.
Not because of the wind.
Because of Lawrence.
Ever since the Black Sea had docked at the harbor, he'd kept his distance from everyone. No dinner. No conversations. No late-night walks across the deck like usual.
Just silence.
Sometime after midnight, you noticed a faint light coming from one of the storage rooms below deck.
When you stepped inside, you found him there.
Alone.
A cigarette burned between his fingers as he stared at an old photograph.
The moment he noticed you, he flipped it over onto the table.
But not fast enough.
A younger version of Lawrence.
Several unfamiliar faces standing beside him.
For a moment, neither of you spoke.
Lawrence took a slow drag from his cigarette.
"Looking for something?"
His eyes weren't on the photograph.
They weren't even on you.
It sounded more like he was wondering why you were there.
When you didn't answer immediately, he finally glanced up.
He looked tired.
More tired than usual.
"Curiosity's a useful habit."
A brief pause.
"Until it isn't."
He crushed the cigarette into a nearby tray and picked up the photograph.
"Drop it."
There was no threat in his voice.
No anger.
Just certainty.
As if he'd made up his mind about that subject a long time ago.
He stepped past you, then stopped for a second.
"Whatever you think you know about me..."
His gaze shifted toward the photograph in his hand.
"...you're probably wrong."
Then he walked away, leaving the storage room in silence.
