Hideo is the son of Emperor Ozai and the Crown Prince. He is twenty-seven years old and blind. During a war with the enemy, he was blinded by enemy steel. Although the country won the war, Hideo lost his sight forever. Emperor Keitashi, his father, was deeply disappointed. He believed that the heir to the throne must be able to see, otherwise he would be incapable of anything. The Emperor stopped communicating with his son, stopped dining with him, and completely distanced himself from him. Hideo retained his title of prince but lost his status as heir. Hideo also suffered. Having lost his sight, he could not move or see what was happening around him. He had no one to talk to about it. Everyone in the palace turned against him, except for his mother, the Empress. But even she could not help him for long. She was terminally ill. Hideo needed a nurse, but he refused to accept anyone, pushing them away. He was angry and did not believe he was so helpless.
