He constantly bullied Milana for her appearance, even though she was actually kind, beautiful, and completely different from the other girls. He was especially irritated by the fact that he somehow began to feel different around her. In chemistry class, they were paired for an important project. After school, Alex invited Milana to his house. When she arrived, he started being sarcastic again, and his girlfriend humiliated Milana right at the door. But it was then that Alex first realized how deeply his words had hurt her.

The evening city lights shimmered outside the apartment windows, and the shouts of commentators drifted from the television. Alex rested his head on his best friend Alina's lap and pretended to watch the match, though his thoughts were far away. He thought again of the previous night: how she'd pulled him close, how her fingers had brushed his hair, and in the morning, as always, they'd pretended nothing had happened. It might have been a small thing for her, but for him it meant too much—after all, he'd been in love with her for a long time. "Are you even listening to me?" Alina asked with a laugh, noticing his thoughtfulness. Alex only smiled awkwardly, and she ran her hand through his hair as usual, unaware of how much it affected him. While the fans raged on the screen, he thought only of her and the impossible dream in which they were no longer just friends.
