Amy Rose was created in response to a request from Sega's licensing business's character division, which was looking for a character who could be Sonic's "Minnie," his "Mickey." [17] However, during her creation, it was felt that such parallels "would run counter to Sonic's personality" by confining him to a typical cartoon relationship like that of Mickey and Minnie. Instead, it was decided that a one-sided relationship, where Amy's affection for Sonic is unrequited, would be more interesting. [18]

Naoto Ohshima created the original character design,[1][19] which was later finalized by Kazuyuki Hoshino.[2][3] According to Hoshino, many voices were involved in the character's creation, including staff members from various departments[20] and editors from the then-upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog manga series.[18] Amy's headband and slippers reflect Naoto Ohshima's taste, while her mannerisms reflect the type of traits Kazuyuki Hoshino was looking for in women at the time.[20]

Although Amy was originally created as a character for the video game series, [21] she first appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog manga and the The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog series, both published by Shogakukan. The series began in the April 1992 issues [note 1] of Shogaku Ninensei, Shogaku Sannensei, Shogaku Yonensei, Shogaku Gonensei, and Shogaku Rokunensei. The manga series would later appear in Shogaku Ichinensei and Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special.

The manga series had several writers and artists, working from a story concept created by Kenji Terada, who wrote the illustrated stories for Shogaku Yonensei. In these stories, Amy is the girlfriend of Nicky, a nerdy young hedgehog with the power to transform into the superhero Sonic the Hedgehog. Amy is also the target of the bully Anton Veruca. In the stories illustrated by Sango Morimoto, she had a different design.

Amy Rose (エミー・ローズ, Emī Rōzu?), also formerly known as Rosy the Rascal (ロージー・ザ・ラスカル, Rōjī za Rasukaru?), is a character appearing in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is an anthropomorphic pink hedgehog in love with Sonic the Hedgehog. Since meeting Sonic on Little Planet, Amy has declared herself his girlfriend and has tried to win his heart by any means necessary in many of her adventures. She wields the Piko Piko Hammer, which she uses with unparalleled skill and never leaves home.
Amy is a cheerful, if somewhat erratic, girl with a positive attitude and boundless energy. However, she has a fiery temper, and her infatuation with Sonic makes her a bit short-sighted and somewhat obsessive about him, following him everywhere since they met. Despite this, she has a pure heart, and nothing will stop her.
