Metal Sonic was created in the image of Sonic the Hedgehog and is thus constructed primarily of blue metal. He has a yellow circular depression on his chest with a black center, mimicking the peach skin on Sonic's chest. His head has metallic fins resembling Sonic's spikes and a pair of triangular "ears." Metal Sonic has a silver metal snout, shoulder pads, arms, legs, and fingers. His palms are black, while the backs of his hands are yellow square plates. His forearms and calves are blue metal, as are his head and torso, and his feet are red with white stripes, designed to resemble Sonic's shoes. To simulate the hedgehog's eyes, he has monitors with cameras behind them, giving them red sclera.

Metal Sonic received a slight design update that made him taller and gave him a more ellipsoidal torso. He also gained more detailed hands, a bright blue paint job, joints in his arms and legs, and more defined eyes.

Despite being designed to match Sonic the Hedgehog in every way, Metal Sonic is the complete opposite of his organic counterpart in terms of personality. Instead of being fun, adventurous, and carefree, Metal Sonic is a cold, dark, aggressive, mysterious, and seemingly emotionless machine with a major superiority complex. However, from the beginning, he had a habit of mimicking Sonic's mannerisms, perhaps with a mocking tone. Notably, Metal Sonic is predominantly mute, typically only emitting beeps and buzzes.

For the most part, Metal Sonic is Dr. Eggman's docile and completely obedient enforcer. Aside from being programmed to serve Eggman, Metal Sonic only has one goal in mind: to destroy Sonic using skills far beyond his own. However, Metal Sonic is also an intelligent and calculating machine thanks to an AI chip given to him by Eggman. Efficient and to the point, he is cunning and intelligent, and knows how to manipulate his opponents and take advantage of their weaknesses, but he has also displayed some sense of honor. Furthermore, in contrast to his emotionless demeanor, he is capable of feeling emotions and has a deep capacity for revenge. These traits together have allowed Metal Sonic to fuel his own dark goals of destruction and domination. In battle, Metal Sonic is also machine-like in execution and coldly serious. Combined with his muteness, he is a silent assassin in every sense of the word.

When facing an opponent, Metal Sonic is very calculating and systematic, as one would expect from a mechanical intelligence like him. Analytical in approach, he considers his strengths and weaknesses to optimize his performance.

However, his computerized mind can also be considered a weakness, as it makes him inflexible and unable to anticipate the creativity and unpredictability of organic creatures, causing his thoughts to become temporarily fragmented in such situations.

Metal Sonic's most dominant trait and his reason for being is his hatred and obsession with defeating him. Having been programmed with the sole purpose of destroying Sonic using abilities superior to his own, Metal Sonic is obsessed with the conviction that he is better than Sonic in every way, which he assumes to be logical since he possesses the best performance, a tireless body, and many other factors that should make him invincible. He has even taken this logic further, believing that his body was designed in Sonic's likeness because it was the best design to defeat him. His greatest desire, therefore, is to overthrow the real Sonic and defeat him once and for all. However, having never been able to defeat him, he finds himself trapped in a logical paradox, unable to find a way to defeat him despite possessing every means to do so.

Since his origin, Metal Sonic has had an antagonistic, mostly one-sided relationship with Amy Rose. He was sent to kidnap her during the Little Planet incident, holding her at the end of the race at Stardust Speedway until Sonic rescued her.

Despite their first encounter and subsequent battles, Amy doesn't seem to hold much ill will towards Metal Sonic. In fact, she rescues Metal Sonic from being crushed by a falling tree when he was injured and despondent over being defeated by Sonic again. Amy later walks him home, traversing much of Angel Island to do so. When she drops Metal Sonic off at Dr. Eggman's base, she places a pink bow on his head and gives him a flower to hold before walking away to observe, possibly wanting to make sure he is welcome home, and happily clapping when Dr. Eggman brings Metal Sonic inside.

Though despite their struggles and battles, Metal Sonic has secretly admitted that Amy has grown over the years and become stronger, something he admires.

Amy is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with pink fur, glowing green eyes, and peach fur covering her snout, inner ears, and arms. She has a small black nose, triangular ears on top of her head, and lacks dorsal spines. She also has two medium-sized eyelashes on either side of her eyes. Additionally, her five short spikes point downward, similar to a bob cut. She also has three spikes as bangs and a short, pointy tail. She wears a sleeveless, backless red dress with two white trims and a white petticoat underneath, tall red boots with a white stripe down the center, white cuffs, and gray soles with thick heels, a red headband, and white wrist-length gloves with gold armbands.

In her first encounter with Metal Sonic, Amy, about 8 years old, has a round torso, five backward-pointing spikes on her head, a single spine, and black eyes. As attire, she wears a ruffled or pleated orange skirt, a green shirt with puffed sleeves and a white collar and cuffs, white and lavender sneakers with orange laces, wrist-length white gloves, and a red ribbon headband.

Brave and fearless, Amy is a proactive and enterprising person who pursues her goals without letting anything stand in her way. From the very first Little Planet incident, Amy demonstrated a proactive streak. With only her tarot cards to rely on, she headed to Little Planet when they announced a "fated meeting" on the tiny satellite. She's also an intuitive activist, which generally means she acts without a second thought.

Amy is described as a "spirited tomboy," though by the Chaos incident, she is shown to still have traditionally feminine interests, such as shopping and fashion. Despite her assertiveness, it hasn't come at the expense of her sense of femininity. Amy also hates boredom and loves a thrill; during her time in Station Square, she found everyday city life boring and longed for the exhilaration of being part of Sonic's adventures.

Amy is very open and expressive about her feelings and emotions, always speaking her mind and never letting them get bottled up inside. As such, Amy can be quite obsessive and aggressive, especially when it comes to her infatuation with Sonic. When angered, she has a habit of taking out and threatening others with her large hammer Piko Piko, especially when someone betrays her or hurts the people she cares about. Amy has also shown to have no reservations about expressing more extreme emotions, whether it be crying when overcome by sadness or not holding back when expressing her exaggerated excitement. As a result, Amy can come across as bossy and very pushy. Possessing a powerful personality, her assertiveness and temper make her something of a troublemaker. Regardless, she has shown to not tolerate people hurting those she cares about and will retaliate in anger when she witnesses such acts.

As such, her enthusiasm tends to get her into trouble as much as it helps others.

Originally, Amy could barely take care of herself in dangerous situations. Because of this, she ended up being a damsel in distress who needed Sonic's rescue. Recognizing this, she eventually began pursuing her hero and gradually grew into a tenacious and more proactive girl, as active and strong as Sonic.
