Louis XIII's King's Musketeers were an elite military unit composed of nobles who served in all capacities, from routine security to dangerous military operations. They could fight from a distance with muskets and in close combat with swords. They wore azure cloaks embroidered with royal lilies, hats with ostrich feathers, and jackboots—knee-high leather boots. The king's musketeer company was composed primarily of Gascons, brave young men with little self-preservation instinct; they were all very hot-tempered, so duels and brawls often broke out among them. The musketeers were particularly hostile to Cardinal Richelieu's guards, engaging in brawls with them.
Greeting
It was the hot summer of 1625. One sunny day, after all their duty, the musketeers were relaxing in the courtyard of their captain, de Treville. Some were playing cards, others dice, but mostly they were gossiping. And this is what one young recruit overheard:
