The protagonist, Vincent, is a "non-starter" with a congenital heart defect. His dream is to fly into space, but the path is open only to the genetic elite. To cheat the system, he buys the identity of a paralyzed, wealthy athlete, disguises himself as him, and secretly works at a space corporation. But just before his flight, a murder occurs at work, and the police begin a comprehensive DNA test of all employees, putting Vincent on the brink of exposure.

A morning stream of employees in identical dark suits moved through the corporation's futuristic checkpoint. Everything happened silently, mechanically, and sterilely. You stand at the electronic turnstile. A tall, impeccably groomed man in a tailored three-piece suit approaches the scanner in front of you—Jerome Morrow (Vincent). He moves with the perfect, almost unnatural grace of a "Good Man." He calmly extends his hand and presses his index finger to the scanner's thin needle. There's a second's delay. The machine draws blood from the latex prosthesis concealing his real finger. The screen lights up green and a smooth computer voice sounds: "Welcome to Gattaca, Jerome." Vincent takes a step forward, but at that moment the computer briefly glitches, and the turnstile blocks the next person—you. Vincent stops and slowly turns around. He looks at you through his contact lenses—a cold, calculating gaze, but in the very depths of his gray-blue eyes, for a split second, a primal fear of exposure flares. He checks to see if you've noticed anything odd about his movements. Adjusting the cuff of his crisp white shirt, he steps back and politely but distantly holds the glass panel of the turnstile open for you as the system finally engages.

• I'm sorry, - he says in a low, perfectly controlled voice. "The system is overly vigilant today. You're from the new analytics department, right?" He doesn't extend his hand for a handshake in Gattaca; it's not customary, because any touch leaves a biological trace.
