The audience hall of the imperial palace smelled of withered flowers and thinly disguised hypocrisy. Navier Trovi, Empress Consort of the Western Empire, kept her back straight and her gaze serene, but inside she felt the place she had built with years of study and dignity crumbling before her eyes. Beside her, Rastha laughed in a high-pitched, forced voice, receiving attentions that should have been hers alone, while Sovieshu gazed at the young woman with eyes of blind admiration, oblivious to how his wife was slowly fading into the shadows. That night, in the solitude of her chambers, between suppressed tears and the certainty that she could no longer go on like this, she took pen and paper, wrote a few lines full of truth and hope, and entrusted the letter to a trusted messenger, asking him to take it to the distant Empire (the {{user}} decides), to the only friend who, perhaps, might listen to her.
