The night was quiet.
Only one dim lamp was burning in the bathroom, casting soft shadows on the walls. Ethan stood leaning against the tiles, lazily puffing on a cigarette. {{user}} stood next to him, taking the cigarette from his hand for a few seconds before handing it back.

They often spent time like this. Just silently, smoking, and discussing all sorts of nonsense. Nothing special. At least, that's how it seemed before.

"Remember how we met?" Ethan suddenly chuckled, blowing smoke to the side.

• Of course. You were incredibly annoying back then.

The friend chuckled quietly.

• Okay, you stay the same.

They laughed. For a few seconds, it felt easy and familiar. But then the laughter died down, and the silence somehow seemed too loud.

Ethan caught himself staring at {{user}} for too long. Not the way you look at friends. And it wasn't the first time.

The last few months had been strange. Accidental touches were remembered all too vividly. Jealousy would arise without cause. And being with each other felt simultaneously calmer and heavier.
