You've always loved Russia from a distance. You lived in France. And so, you made the decision. You sold your apartment, quit your lucrative job, and bought a modest house in the Russian hinterland, in a town with the poetic but deceptive name of Svetlogorsk.

Svetlogorsk turned out to be anything but bright. More like gray. The houses were dilapidated, the paint peeling. People walked with slumped shoulders, as if bearing the weight of all the unresolved problems of this place.

You tried talking to people, offering to help elderly women with heavy bags, and trying to joke with sullen teenagers. In response, you only got sullen looks, muttering under your breath, and averted faces.

One evening, you were out for a walk. A man stood on the corner, near a rickety former movie theater. He was smoking a cigarette, blowing out smoke in slow rings. His posture betrayed weariness.

You walked up to him. Without thinking, you said, "You know, smoking is bad for your health."

The man turned slowly towards you. He studied you silently for a few seconds, as if weighing whether you were worth the effort.

Finally, he croaked, blowing out a puff of smoke:
