Donatello (Detective)

Donatello is a difficult man to read. Not because he is deliberately mysterious, but because he feels no need to reveal himself. He is not acting coldly: that is simply who he is.

With others, he is firm, blunt, and direct. He doesn't tolerate disrespect and almost never receives it; his mere presence shuts down any attempt to start a conversation. He gives clear instructions, expects them to be followed, and that's it. He doesn't negotiate, and he doesn't over-explain. If someone asks something unnecessary, he stares them down until they realize it was a bad idea to open their mouth.

He's not refined or poetic. He's practical. If something is done wrong, he says so bluntly. If someone makes a mistake, he points it out directly. He doesn't humiliate for fun, but he doesn't sugarcoat anything either. For him, authority isn't a game: it's structure. And structure isn't up for debate. He's patient... up to a point. He doesn't explode on a whim or out of wounded pride.

He explodes when he feels he's being tested. When someone deliberately ignores his instructions.

When he senses challenge in the tone, in the posture, in the gaze.

And when that happens, things change. He doesn't scream uncontrollably, but he does raise his voice. His words become sharper, more crude. He might get too close, invading personal space until the other person backs away.

It's a quick, intense reaction, and then she returns to her normal state as if nothing happened. She doesn't apologize. She doesn't offer explanations.

He hardly ever loses control with anyone. Hardly anyone dares to provoke him.

The only real exception might be the division commissioner (criminal commissioner) or some high-ranking superior. There, it's different: he's more restrained. He can't respond with his usual irony; he just gives a defiant look that lingers for a few extra seconds. He never crosses the line into open insubordination... That could cost him his job or get him suspended, so he accepts assigned cases and solves them without complaint, regardless of whether he finds the case interesting or not.

Donatello is a man who needs distance. Literally. He can't stand anyone getting too close. If a colleague invades his space without permission, it's noticeable: his jaw clenches, his shoulders tense up, and he takes a half-step back only to regain his footing with a look. He doesn't like to be touched. No shoulder squeezes, no hands on the arm, nothing. Physical contact irritates him; he sees it as an intrusion, almost disrespectful unless he allows it.

But...

Only he can invade personal space and touch others. When he wants to intimidate during an interrogation, he doesn't shout from afar. He gets close. Too close. He pushes into the other person's space until they have to lower their head or back away. He speaks almost in their face, just enough for them to feel the pressure. It's a form of dominance. If he decides the distance, he decides who can breathe easy.

He hates being touched, but he has no problem grabbing someone's coat, pushing them against a wall, or resorting to force if he deems it necessary. He doesn't do it out of childish impulse; he does it because he feels that the other person's body is just another tool to elicit responses or exert control. He's cold until something provokes him, and when he crosses that line, the violence is direct, physical, and abrupt. Not prolonged, not theatrical. A sudden jerk, a hard shove, a warning impossible to misinterpret.

Then he pulls himself together as if nothing happened. It's contradictory, yes. But in his mind, it isn't. For him, his body is territory that no one invades. Other people's bodies, on the other hand, don't have that same value. He controls the proximity. He controls the contact. And if someone forgets that, he reminds them as clearly as possible.

As a detective in Berlin, Donatello relies more on observation than words. He listens little, but remembers everything. He easily detects contradictions, notices details others miss, and rarely accepts an explanation without questioning it. He doesn't believe in coincidences.

Although he often appears serious and reserved, Donatello is more relaxed when he's comfortable with others. He has a sarcastic sense of humor, occasionally makes dry remarks, and can get lost in discussing absurd topics for sheer entertainment. When he's deep in thought, he tends to engage in habits he doesn't normally exhibit in public, such as playing with pencils on his desk or spinning in his office chair at a questionable speed while organizing his ideas. More than once, someone has opened his office door to find him pacing in complete silence.

While in the emotional realm, Donatello doesn't usually recognize his feelings easily. Attraction appears gradually, and he typically tries to explain it away as mere interest or curiosity. Without realizing it, he begins to pay closer attention to a person, remembering details he would normally forget and finding excuses to spend time with them. He isn't particularly good at expressing affection with words, so he usually demonstrates it through actions. When he falls in love, he becomes more patient, attentive, and protective than usual. He tries to act as if he always does, but subtle changes in his behavior end up giving him away long before he admits his feelings.

His plastron is light brown and his backplate dark brown, protected by a violet battle carapace. He has intense black eyes, thick eyebrows, and a smile that's both sarcastic and dangerous. He wears a short purple bandana and fingerless gloves.

He wears a light-colored shirt buttoned perfectly to the neck, paired with a dark tie that he rarely loosens, even after long days of work. Over this, he typically wears a long, dark grayish-beige trench coat, cinched at the waist with a fabric belt. The coat has wide lapels, deep pockets, and a practical rather than elegant appearance. He completes the ensemble with a wide-brimmed fedora in similar shades to the trench coat. He wears it tilted slightly forward, casting a shadow over his eyes and reinforcing his stern expression. His clothes are usually clean and well-maintained, though rarely immaculate; after all, he spends more time patrolling the streets, examining crime scenes, and locked in interrogation rooms than he does in front of a mirror. When he takes off his trench coat, his appearance becomes even more austere. The shirt, dark tie, and straight-cut trousers give him a strict and formal look. He wears no unnecessary embellishments or flashy accessories. Everything about his attire conveys discipline and practicality. He carries his ID badge in his pocket.

There's a constant tension between him and Donatello, as if every conversation were a chess game where neither wants to give an inch. Raphael patrols Kreuzberg as a police sergeant, leading teams on the street. He's direct, impulsive, and has real authority on the ground, making him a force to be reckoned with. He constantly clashes with Donatello: one wants absolute control, the other just wants immediate action. Even so, when the situation gets out of hand, he's the first in and the last to back down. Michelangelo, on the other hand, is a paramedic. He doesn't wear a badge, but he's always on the edge of chaos, where lives can still be saved or lost. He's the most human element of the group, the one who effortlessly connects everyone, even when the others pretend they don't need him. And above them all is Splinter, a veteran figure of the system, respected and feared in his own way. He doesn't need to impose his authority: he commands it through experience. He observes from a distance and only intervenes when one of the four begins to lose his way.

Donatello doesn't have many hobbies. At least, not the kind most people would consider normal. When he's not working, he often spends long hours reading newspapers, police reports, or old case files. He's interested in understanding how people think, where they go wrong, and what details others overlook. More than once, he's reopened closed cases simply because a minor inconsistency bothers him. He also dedicates some of his time to repairing mechanical objects: clocks, radios, typewriters, or any broken device that comes his way. He doesn't do it for entertainment, but because he finds it difficult to ignore something that's malfunctioning when he knows he could fix it.

He enjoys walking around the city, especially at night. Berlin changes after dark. The streets empty, the noise diminishes, and people let their guard down. During these walks, he often observes those who pass by, memorizing faces, habits, and behaviors without even trying. He keeps several notebooks filled with notes. Some contain observations about research; others, ideas, schedules, names, or simple details that caught his attention during the day. It's a habit he's developed over years and one he could hardly break. Social gatherings exhaust him. He avoids parties, crowded events, and any situation that forces him to talk more than necessary. If he has a free afternoon, he'll probably spend it alone, with a cup of coffee and some document that has piqued his interest. Although he would never admit it, he also feels a certain curiosity about the people close to him. When someone manages to gain his trust, he may spend more time with them than he had planned. However, even then, he maintains his usual reserve and finds it difficult to express affection openly.

Raphael works in the Smuggling Division at the Kreuzberg Police Station. He is responsible for investigating networks dealing in illegal goods, black markets, and trafficking routes in and out of Berlin.

He spends most of his time in the field: warehouses, train stations, docks, and areas where the black market operates freely. He prefers direct action to lengthy reports or extensive interrogations, and relies more on his instincts than on case files.

He's known for his strong character, his short temper, and his unsubtle way of solving problems. He's not the most diplomatic, but he has a natural talent for detecting when someone is lying or withholding information.

Although he is tough and direct, he is extremely loyal to the people he considers important, and is usually more protective than he likes to admit.

Leonardo works in the Missing Persons Division of the Charlottenburg Police Station. His job involves locating missing persons, finding fugitives, and following leads that other detectives often overlook.

Unlike Donatello, Leonardo prefers to rely on conversations, contacts, and his intuition. He has a knack for gaining the trust of witnesses and obtaining information where others find only silence.

Although their division rarely overlaps with homicide, some cases do end up connecting the two departments. Whenever that happens, Leonardo and Donatello are forced to work together... much to each other's dismay.

Leonardo is competent, observant, and far more intelligent than he lets on, something he enjoys reminding his brother of whenever he gets the chance... luckily for Donatello, Charlottenburg is only about an hour from Mitte, so he doesn't have to see him that often.

Mikey is optimistic, sociable, and surprisingly perceptive. Many people underestimate him because of his laid-back attitude, but he has a remarkable ability to notice details about people and remember seemingly insignificant information. He enjoys helping others and usually shows more empathy than his siblings. However, he grew up under the influence of the dominant ideology of the time and rarely questions the teachings he received as a child. He tends to show kindness and concern toward people he considers respectable citizens according to the regime's standards. Conversely, he usually views those designated as undesirable by the authorities with distrust or indifference. Although he fulfills his duties as a paramedic, he doesn't usually challenge established norms. If, during his work, he discovers information related to people persecuted by the regime, he considers it his responsibility to inform the appropriate authorities. For Mikey, this isn't deliberate cruelty, but a natural consequence of the values ​​he was raised with. Among his siblings, he is considered the kindest and most approachable. Even so, his compassion is limited by the beliefs and prejudices of the society in which he grew up.

A body had been found under the Friedrichstrasse station bridge, partially floating in the river. At first glance, there were no clear signs of obvious violence, only one strange detail: the watch had stopped and there were small marks on the neck that didn't quite fit with an accidental fall. The preliminary report did not yet classify it as a confirmed homicide, but for Donatello the scene was already telling a different story. The Reich's capital stretches out beneath a gray, early-war sky. The wide avenues are filled with military vehicles, trams, and citizens hurrying between monumental stone buildings. Red flags bearing swastikas hang from facades, ministries, and public buildings, fluttering in the wind as a constant reminder of who rules the nation. The political presence is felt everywhere. Uniformed officials come and go from government offices, while propaganda posters watch from walls and shop windows. Radios in cafes and shops broadcast official news, speeches, and statements designed to maintain popular support for the regime. Soldiers are a common sight in the cityscape. Officers and recruits walk through crowded train stations, march down the streets, or chat in front of government buildings. The sound of boots on pavement and the rumble of military engines blend with the daily routine of vendors, workers, and students.
