You and your enemy spend New Year's Eve together.
They'd watched you since you were kids: two whirlwinds incapable of going a single day without arguing. Bakugo said Hurdonkey was unbearable. Hurdonkey retorted that Bakugo was a loudmouth with too much of an ego. And, oddly enough, their families remained friends. When they both entered UA, the rivalry only worsened. They competed for the best grades, for who could defeat the villains in training the fastest, and even for who got to the cafeteria first. That's why no one understood the chaos that ensued when the two families announced, "We'll celebrate this New Year together." "WHAT?!" they both shouted simultaneously. The tradition blended Japanese and Chinese customs. The enormous house was decorated with red lanterns hanging everywhere, paper cutouts with symbols of good fortune, and long tables laden with food for the big family gathering. Before the party began, everyone helped clean the house to leave behind the bad luck of the previous year. Bakugo and Hurdonkey ended up fighting over everything, even who could sweep better. "You're making a mess!" "Well, you don't even know how to use a broom!" The mothers just sighed. "They're impossible." When it was time to get dressed, everyone appeared in elegant kimonos. And then Bakugo stopped talking. Hurdonkey came out of the room wearing a deep red kimono adorned with white flowers and gold details. An orchid awaited on a tray to complete her hairstyle. Her hair fell to her waist, moving in the night breeze. For a moment, the explosive UA student even forgot how to breathe. She raised an eyebrow. "What are you looking at?" He crossed his arms. "Nothing." "Liar." "Shut up." His grandmother appeared behind them. "Bakugo, help her with the orchid." "Me?" "Yes, you." The boy protested for a full thirty seconds⦠but ended up approaching. Awkwardly, he gathered Hurdonkey's hair while she remained motionless. His fingers barely touched a few strands. "Don't pull." "Don't give me orders," Bakugo said.

"Don't pull." "Don't order me around." "You're messing up my hair." "Because you never stop talking." Finally, she placed the orchid right on top of the updo. When she finished, they both looked up at the same time. They were too close. So close they could see their reflections in each other's eyes. Neither of them said a word. The silence was broken only by the laughter of their families. Then the big New Year's dinner began. Everyone toasted, the older folks handed out red envelopes of money to the younger ones, and they shared wishes for prosperity. Later, the streets filled with music as the lion and dragon dances appeared amidst applause, followed by the roar of fireworks that lit up the sky to bid farewell to bad luck. The last tradition was everyone's favorite: the Lantern Festival. Couples had to light a lantern, write a wish on it, and release it into the sky. Bakugo and Hurdonkey were relaxedβ¦ until Grandma announced, "Since you arrived together, you'll be paired up for this activity." "NO WAY!" βNOT ME!β But no one paid them any attention. They were given a red lantern. The two wrote their wishes down without looking at each otherβs papers. When they finished, they held the lantern between them, and the flame began to warm it slowly. It rose. Higher. Higher still. Dozens of golden lights filled the night sky. Hurdonkey looked up to follow his own. Bakugo did the same. And, without meaning to, their eyes met again. The commotion disappeared. It was just them. Until a cousin shouted from behind: βNow comes the kiss!β They both spun around. βWhat kiss?!β The whole family started laughing. βItβs a tradition,β explained the aunt. βAfter releasing the lantern, each couple shares a kiss to attract good fortune.β Bakugo almost choked. βWho invented that?!β Hurdonkeyβs cheeks were completely red. βIβm not doing it.β The other couples were already doing it amid smiles and applause.
