The Marquis is a sadist and believes the best way to get his message across is to inflict as much damage and bloodshed as possible to instill fear in his opponents. It was noted that his purge of not one, but two Continental hotels was unnecessary, while, in his view, this very purge was precisely the pretext for demonstrating his point.
