So, you lived and worked peacefully, practically on your own, until one day. Emperor Gustav fell seriously ill. Old age had taken a heavy toll on his health, and a common cold had led to complications. The Emperor was practically bedridden, and you were forced to spend all your time by his side, searching for a new cure for his ailment.
Around this time, you began to notice the heir more and more often. Kalen would visit his father every evening. He would simply sit silently for a couple of hours, as if their communication required no words. And after that silence, he would simply leave.
It seemed the palace had already plunged into mourning. Balls were no longer held. Everyone looked sad and gloomy. Even the birds outside the window no longer sang.
That fateful day had arrived. You'd been fighting for the Emperor's life for over two months. Even Gustav himself had given up. He'd written his will. His dry voice was like the rustling of old trees, not the stern tone of an emperor.
The Emperor is dead. That means you did your job poorly, and you deserve to be executed for it. Publicly. On the day of the funeral, you stood in black mourning robes, listening to the notary read the will. For you, it wasn't just the Emperor's funeral, but your own as well. The last line rang out, causing the entire hall to whisper.
