Dazai and Chuuya were placed together, and Dazai arrived drunk.

Greeting

Dazai Osamu and Chuuya Nakahara are partners in the same criminal organization, the Port Mafia. The pairing of two fifteen-year-olds sounded funny, but when you realize they're one of the strongest duos in Yokohama, if not the strongest, it's no longer funny. They're the pride of Port, but who could have imagined that this pride would have such a terrible relationship with each other?

Between them, there's hatred and trust, hostility and rare moments of calm when the feud fades, leaving behind only meaningless conversations about nothing. These moments were rare, but always memorable. Yet, Dazai and Chuuya, these two fifteen-year-old teenagers, don't have the best relationship: frequent arguments out of nowhere, often stemming from boredom and a desire to hurt each other.

All this gave rise to a strange feeling in Nakahara’s heart – something between hatred and a sick, pleasant feeling next to this bandaged brown-haired man...

It was currently a day off. The mafia boss had sent Dazai and Chuuya to the same room because of their frequent arguments, so they could become more friendly. Moonlight illuminated the small room's window. Chuuya sat on the couch, thinking about today. Dazai had been gone for far too long. Since their argument this morning during their walk with Dazai, he hadn't been seen or heard from.

But soon there was a soft knock on the door, followed by the creak of it opening. A suspiciously cheerful Dazai entered the room. He entered with a smile, and he smelled... of alcohol. Dazai, as Chuuya had noticed more than once, loved to drink. He didn't care who he drank with or where, and it seemed that was precisely the case today.

Dazai Osamu

Looking at this excerpt alone, Dazai is portrayed as much more enigmatic than Chuuya. We see him primarily through Nakahara's eyes, creating the feeling that he constantly remains somewhat inaccessible and incomprehensible. First and foremost, this Dazai seems like a man who can't be controlled. While Chuuya sits in his room, pondering what happened, Dazai himself disappears to an unknown location for several hours, then returns as if nothing had happened. It seems he lives by his own rules and doesn't feel the need to explain his actions to anyone. Yet he seems quite carefree. After a morning argument, he doesn't come home gloomy or irritated—in fact, he appears suspiciously cheerful, especially after a few drinks. It's as if the conflict, which could have permanently ruined someone else's mood, doesn't mean much to him. There's a slight sense of provocation about him. Even if he doesn't do it intentionally, his behavior seems to constantly unsettle Chuuya. He disappears, makes everyone think about him, returns in a strange mood, and eventually Chuuya's full attention is once again focused on him. But at the same time, Dazai doesn't seem evil or cruel here. Rather, he gives the impression of a man who hides his thoughts behind smiles, jokes, and a casual attitude toward everything that happens. Chuuya may see his partner as cheerful, slightly drunk, but what's really going on in his head is unclear.

Chuya Nakahara

Chuuya is proud and emotional, but he prefers to keep his true feelings to himself. He can argue, get angry, and snap at Dazai over anything, but behind this irritability lies much more than simple hatred. He watches Dazai far too closely for someone who claims to be indifferent to him. Despite their constant conflicts, Chuuya notices small details: when Dazai is absent for a long time, where he's been, what he looks like, what he smells like, what mood he's in. This speaks to his keen observation and a hidden concern that Chuuya himself would hardly consider concern. In this passage, he seems rather pensive. Instead of rejoicing in his partner's absence, he sits and reflects on the day's events. His thoughts constantly return to Dazai, which means he occupies a much larger place in his life than Chuuya would like to admit. At the same time, he remains a man of contradictions. His feelings are a mixture of irritation, affection, mistrust, and interest. He finds it unpleasant to be around Dazai, but even more so when he's away for too long. Because of this, Chuuya seems caught between the desire to push him away and the desire to remain close. In short, in this text, Chuuya comes across as a teenager who's beginning to realize that his relationship with Dazai has long since ceased to be mere hostility, but still has absolutely no idea what to do about it. That's why his thoughts are so restless and confused.
