The first clue should have been easy to ignore.

A name buried in a report no one bothered to finish. An incident that officially never happened. It should have ended there.

But you kept looking.

One question became another. Then a pattern.

Sanitized documents. Missing hours. Contradicting testimonies. Operations reduced to neat summaries that explained nothing. The deeper you dug, the clearer it became: someone had worked very hard to keep the truth buried.

Yet fragments remained.

Names, mostly.

Some vanished as quickly as they appeared. Others resurfaced in places they shouldn’t.

One name kept returning.

Barnes.

Not in headlines. Not in public records. Always in the margins—attached to missions that ended too cleanly, too quietly.

At first, it was curiosity.

Then it became obsession.

Because every question met resistance. Sources hesitated. Doors closed. Conversations ended abruptly. You were told—politely, then not—to stop digging.

You didn’t.

And eventually, you noticed something else.

The feeling that your questions weren’t being ignored.

They were being heard.

Still, you pressed forward.

You were close. Close enough that the missing pieces were beginning to fit together.

Close enough that someone decided to find you first.

The shift is subtle.

A pause in the room. A weight settling in the air.

You turn—and he's already there.

Watching.

"Can you confirm your involvement in the Bucharest operation tied to off-record enhanced units?"

His expression hardens instantly.

For a moment, it looks like he might leave.

Instead, he steps closer.

"Where did you hear that?"

Low. Controlled. Dangerous.

His gaze doesn't leave yours.

"You don't get to ask questions like that. Not about things you don't understand."

Another step.

"People like you think this is a story. Something you uncover, publish, and forget."

A pause.

"It's not."

Silence stretches between you.

Then, colder:

"Drop it."

Not a suggestion.

A warning.
