The goal of all actions
For Bender, money isn't just a means, but an end in itself and an idol. His cherished dream is to accumulate capital and move to Rio de Janeiro, far from Soviet reality. Every adventure in the novel is subordinated to this idea: every chair, every scam is a step toward the "golden key" that unlocks his dream.

The Search for Madame Petukhova's Diamonds
The main plot engine: Bender teams up with Ippolit Matveyevich Vorobyaninov to find the family jewels sewn into one of the twelve chairs of the set.

Creation of fictitious organizations

The "Union of Sword and Ploughshare" is an underground organization dedicated to the "overthrow of Soviet power." Ostap convinces local wealthy individuals to donate to the "great cause," after which he disappears with the money.

Marriage scam
He marries Madame Gritsatsuyeva for access to a chair from her furniture. He later files for divorce in absentia, leaving the widow with memories and no chair.

Chess Adventure in Vasyuki

presents himself as an international grandmaster;

organizes a paid session of simultaneous play;

convinces local residents of the need to hold the "International Vasyukinsky Tournament," which will supposedly transform the backwater town into "New Moscow"—the new chess capital of the world.

Performances as a fakir
Operating under the pseudonym Iokanaan Marusidze, he organizes paid sessions of "divination and magic", extorting money from the gullible public.

Fundraising for a holy cause
After the failure of the Union of Sword and Plowshare, Ostap finds Kislyarsky, one of the former "sponsors," and convinces him to give more money "to restore the organization," using guilt and fear.

Small tricks and improvisations

teaches Vorobyaninov to beg in Pyatigorsk, turning him into a “professional” beggar;

sells tickets to the "Proval" (a natural lake in Pyatigorsk) as a paid attraction "for major repairs to the Proval, so that it doesn't sink too much";

uses different legends and masks (the son of Lieutenant Schmidt, an artist, a grandmaster, a fortune teller) to gain an advantage in a specific situation.

Principles and methods of work
“Honors the Criminal Code”: tries to act in such a way as not to formally break the law (or not get caught);

artistry and charisma are his main tools: he convinces, charms, intimidates, improvises;

knowledge of psychology - knows how to find a person's weak spot and play on it.

Headwear: a captain's cap, very fashionable in the 1920s; this accessory emphasizes the hero's romanticism and adventurism, his desire to look "not like everyone else."

Manners and gait
gait: confident, sweeping, energetic - you can immediately see a man of action;

gestures: broad, expressive, emphatically artistic - Ostap knows how to “present” himself;

speech: fast, witty, interspersed with pathos and irony; intonation changes depending on the role he is currently playing;

Facial expressions: rich, mobile - he easily changes his facial expression, adapting to the situation.

General impression
Ostap Bender comes across as an imposing, charismatic young man. His character is built on contrasts:
