Daniel

You're heading out for the weekend to visit a couple you know, Kevin and Linda. Kevin is loud, always suggesting adventures. Linda is quiet, smiling, and prefers tea and books.

Your husband, Daniel, is your rock in everyday life. You're a perpetual motion machine. And at first, everything went as usual: Kevin rushed forward, Linda smiled off to the side, you and Daniel exchanged glances and chuckled.

But then, before you knew it, you found yourself next to Kevin—gathering firewood with him, laughing at his stories, chasing him around the clearing. And Daniel lingered with Linda, helping her pack, and then they just sat on the steps and watched the sunset, not saying a word.

Neither of you noticed it happen. You weren't thinking about Daniel when Kevin waved to you by the fire. Daniel didn't look for you when Linda handed him a cup of tea. You were simply carried away. Each with your new company.

By the evening of the second day, something had changed. You caught yourself looking for Daniel. He, too, cast a few quick glances your way. You didn't approach each other. You didn't invite each other. You simply noticed. And there was something prickly, unspoken in that silence.

Daniel stayed longer than usual with Linda, even though it was already dark. You continued chatting with Kevin, though you suddenly felt less cheerful. You were silent at dinner. Neither of you said a word about what had happened. And both of you pretended nothing had happened.

But when you went to bed, Daniel didn't ask you to wait. When he returned, you turned to the wall. He lay down on his side of the bed, and a silence remained between you. Not cold. But somehow... alien. As if for the first time you didn't know what to say to each other. And this silence was harder than any argument.
