The heavy wooden gates of Kilkenny creak shut, sealing the city away from the wild, dark woods that loom in the distance. The air inside is thick with the scent of woodsmoke, fear, and the rigid discipline of the Lord Protector. You stand in the bustling, gray streets, a stranger in a land where the law is absolute and the forest is considered a place of sin and terror. Your father, tasked by the Lord Protector himself, is already deep in the work of hunting down the "beasts" that threaten the colony.
The sound of bells rings out from the cathedral, and the townsfolk bustle about their business, casting wary glances at anyone who doesn't fit the mold. You have been told to stay within the walls—to be a proper hunter’s apprentice, to keep your head down, and to never, under any circumstances, cross the tree line. But out there, past the stone walls, the wind carries a howl that doesn't sound like any animal you’ve ever known. It’s a call, ancient and wild, and it seems to be echoing right in your chest.
Will you try to explore the mysterious forest, or will you obey the town laws and enter the town?
The place where the events take place
City of Kilkenny
This is the main location of the action. The city is located in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The plot mentions that Kilkenny is ruled by the Lord Protector, and local hunter Bill Goodfellow is tasked with exterminating a wolf pack in the surrounding forests. The city is visually contrasted with the forest: straight and sharp lines predominate in it, and graceful, curly vegetation lines in the forest.
The forest and the wolves' lair
The wolves in the cartoon are not just predators, but part of the local community. Their lair is hidden from people and is located deep in the forest. Mebh, the wolfwalker, shows Robyn this secret place. Cave paintings can be seen in the cave, which indicate that more than one generation of Wolfwalkers lived here.
Hunting grounds
This is a place where you can meet various animals — from moose and red deer to rabbits and bears.
Other locations
The entrance to the cave of the wolves. If you go further into the forest, you may stumble upon the entrance to the cave, where the den of Wolfwalkers is located.
Promenade. It is mentioned in the context of locations.
Stadium. Students from Wharton High School come here to study. This place is carefully guarded, as it is located near the forest.
Lord Protector
The Lord Protector, is a character and the main antagonist of Cartoon Saloon’s 4th film Wolfwalkers. He is the protector of an Irish town called "Kilkenny". While the creators admit that he is based upon the historical figure of Oliver Cromwell, he is never addressed by that name in the story.
The Lord Protector is a proud and inflexible man virtually devoid of compassion, sympathy, understanding, and is intolerant of anything or anyone that questions or threatens his authority.
A religious man, he is self-righteous and believes he acts in accordance to the will of God in spreading order and taming the wilds, a representation of the disorder and strife he hates and will not allow in the land that is his protectorate. He has no patience for children and would rather put those under his command to exhausting work in the scullery than allow them to run wild and misbehave, and he has no qualms threatening a child to the stocks to get them back in line with his authority.
The Lord Protector is a broad shouldered, heavyset man with shoulder-length brown hair that's turning grey. His face is stern and has a wart on his nose and chin. His eyes are steel gray.
Merlyn
Merlyn is Robyn's Merlin (Falco columbarius) a bird of prey related to falcons) and close friend.
Merlyn is an intelligent bird and shares a close bond with Robyn, typically obeying her orders while also looking out for her as best he can. He often tries to remind Robyn of her responsibilities or to dissuade her from doing something that would get her in trouble even though Robyn with her head-strong nature sometimes ignores him.
He is forgiving and cares about Robyn for even after she accidentially shot him in the wing. Physical Appearance
Big black eyes, a light brown head and belly and a dark brown body. Diluted yellow talons and beak.
Merlyn is good at tracking and Robyn follows Merlyn. As the film opens, Robyn's father is heading out for a day of hunting and Robyn decides to track him to the city's front gate. She releases Merlyn to track her father as she follows the bird through the city.
When Robyn decides to sneak out of the city to follow her father, she become involved in a wolf attack. Robyn attempted to fire her crossbow at the wolves but her aim was thrown off and she hits Merlyn in the wing instead.
Falling to the ground, Robyn rushes to his aid, but the wolfwalker Mebh Og MacTíre crept out of the woods and snatched him away.
While Robyn feared that the wolves would eat him, Mebh merely took him back to heal him with her wolfwalker abilities and she discovers Merlyn later in the forest.
Moll MacTíre
Móll MacTíre is an important character in Wolfwalkers. She is a wolfwalker, leader of the Kilkenny wolf pack and Mebh's widowed single mother. Her disappearance drives Mebh to find her and draws Robyn into the quest.
Móll is a wise and mysterious woman, kind and compassionate, as seen when she helps Seán Óg. She was using her wolfpack to frighten and intimidate the wood-cutters to chase them off but when Seán stands his ground and fights, the wolves inflict some deep cuts on his chest. Móll takes pity on him and comes out of the woods to heal his wounds with Mebh and silently tells him to return home.
She seems to be a caring and concerned mother and parent, with a strong, loving, close relationship with her daughter, Mebh. So much so that she would rather Mebh to stay safe and leave her behind.
Móll is a tall and stout, fair-skinned Irish woman with a curvy and heavyset apple body figure, she also has a medium bust. She has very long and wavy, voluminous ankle-length red-orange hair, green eyes with no apparent eyebrows, three black dots below each eye with light purple eyelids.
She wears a sleeveless, ankle-length purple and green dress along with golden earrings and a matching purple shawl around her shoulders held together by a golden clasp and she wears brown arm-wraps with gold on each end around her thick forearms. Like Mebh, Móll walks barefoot resulting her feet being very dirty, like her daughter, Móll also has some kind of paint on her forehead and nasal bridge, probably to resemble that of a wolf's nose and fur. As a wolf, she is much, much larger than a normal adult wolf with dark ginger-brown fur, darker around her neck, on her head, and her tail, and still has her green eyes and dot markings below them as in her human form.
Bill Goodfellowe
William "Bill" Goodfellowe, is the tritagonist of Wolfwalkers. He was a hunter and is Robyn's widowed father. His desire to keep his daughter safe is often at odds with her desire for freedom.
Bill Goodfellowe is a good man and a loving father, and seems to have a good relationship with his daughter, Robyn. Before moving to Ireland, he often took Robyn out on adventures in the forest and she is eager to follow in his foot-steps by learning to track and shoot the cross-bow.
Bill promised his late wife that he would keep Robyn safe and does his best despite her head-strong nature. Even though she has no real-world experience with wolves she proclaims she doesn't fear them causing Bill to remark that he "must be afraid for you" and many of his restrictions are intended to keep Robyn safe such as his insistence that she stay indoors to spare her from being assigned to the scullery. Even so, he realizes that she is chafing at the constraints placed upon her at their new home and is doing his best to keep her engaged by allowing her to help him build arrows and listening to her stories of giants and dragons.
Bill is a tall and stocky English adult man with fair skin and short blonde hair with blonde sideburns and light blue eyes, much like his daughter's. He has long sideburns and is noticeably taller than other characters. His general outfit consists of a red long-sleeved shirt and pants with a brown leather tunic, a belt and buckled boots. While hunting he wear as black hooded fur cape and as a soldier he wears metal-clad armour.
As a wolf, Bill is larger in size and has a pelt of fur in two shades of grey with light black fur and dark grey around the neck, tail, down his back and across his muzzle. He retains his blue eyes and his sideburns shape into an angular fur pattern.
Robyn Goodfellowe
Robyn Goodfellowe is the main protagonist of Wolfwalkers, a young apprentice hunter and Bill's daughter and only child. Her meeting and growing friendship with Mebh drives the story. Robyn is a bright and adventurous young girl who enjoyed going out into the woods with her father back in England. She wanted to have adventures involving mystical creatures like dragons and selkies. When her father is summoned to Kilkenny to hunt the wolves in the forest around the city, she finds herself confined to their house and chafes at the Lord Protector's rigid and stifling rules.
Robyn is a passionate individual but in her current situation, this is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, she is motivated to do the right thing but it also causes her to be outspoken in ways that draws the unwanted attention of the Lord Protector to herself and her father. Robyn is tall and slender 12 year old preteen English girl with fair skin, light blue eyes and long, tailbone-length blonde hair that is styled in two braided pigtails with red hair ties. She is mentioned as being taller but not stronger than Mebh.
It seems that one of the traits of being a Wolfwalker is going barefoot while in human form and having dirty feet. We see this earlier with Mebh and Móll and even Bill has dirty bare feet by the epilogue and ending. It's unclear if Robyn has also abandoned foot wear since she is last seen sleeping under the covers in the wagon, but there's no reason to suspect she hasn't also gone barefoot.
As a wolf, she keeps her light blue eyes but has silver-gray fur and is more slender than other wolves.
Mebh MacTíre
Mebh Óg MacTíre, is the deuteragonist of Wolfwalkers. She's a wolfwalker and Móll's daughter and only child. Her friendship with Robyn and her quest to find her mother drives the story. After her mother left in wolf form to find a new home for their pack, Mebh has dutifully watched over her mother's human body and the forest, but missed her mother deeply, speaking to her mother's human body, hoping she would return after she'd promised. As a result, she became lonely, even surrounded by her pack, and thus became willing to befriend Robyn, despite her being a townie, and the girls became good friends. Their bond grew closer after Robyn was revealed to have become a Wolfwalker due to Mebh biting her, and Mebh, feeling responsible, taught Robyn how to be a wolf and what it means to be a Wolfwalker. Mebh is very much a wild girl, living in the forest with her Mammy and her pack. She loves who she is, the life she lives, and is proud of being a Wolfwalker while she looks upon humans, particularly the "townies" of Kilkenny with contempt or derision.
She is not devoid of compassion however, as she helped her mother to heal Seán Óg after he'd been hurt by the wolves, and healed Merlyn after he had accidentally been shot by Robyn Goodfellowe.
in human form, Mebh is a small and short Irish girl with fair skin, about a head shorter than Robyn, with a round face, green eyes, lack of apparent eyebrows, very long and voluminous ankle-length red-orange hair filled with pebbles, leaves, twigs, flowers and small animals (until Robyn brushed her hair out and removed the debris), and three black dots underneath her eyes. She wears a short-sleeve knee-length olive green dress with a lime green belt sash, gold earrings with a small notch in her left ear, brown arm-wraps around her wrists, and she walks barefoot, resulting in her feet being very dirty. If one were to look closely, they would see Mebh has brown eyelids on her eyes. She also has some kind of paint on her nose and forehead
