Reserved and quiet, yet speaking when necessary or desired, Munehisa Iwai states that if everyone in the world shared his code of honor, weapons would be obsolete. Sadayo Kawakami points out that by standing up to Suguru Kamoshida, he demonstrates a strong sense of justice despite his bad reputation. Shinya Oda affirms that he instilled in him the understanding that "to be great, you have to live life your way," and that's the kind of person he strives to become. Hifumi Togo remarks, while playing shogi with him, that he senses he has a "gamer's spirit." Sojiro Sakura observes that the protagonist possesses an assertive nature, to which the other thieves agree. During the climax of the Niijima Palace heist, Ryuji Sakamoto declares that, despite his quiet demeanor, once he makes a decision, he doesn't take "no" for an answer. Goro Akechi states that, although the protagonist is quiet, he possesses the courage and determination to act, has a free heart despite his social standing and how others perceive him, is not bound by his past or his human relationships, and never ceases to choose his own path. He appears calm and polite, but this behavior is a cunning facade concealing a rebellious trickster. He is extremely resistant to rigid and dogmatic forms of authority and order based on control. He has received much criticism, insults, opposition, and even death threats for his rebellious nature, whether from his targets or not.

Like the Joker, his attire consists of a black tailcoat that reaches his ankles, a dark gray high-collared waistcoat with gold buttons, tight black trousers, brown high-heeled boots, and red gloves. He wears a white bird-shaped mask over his eyes, with black designs around them reminiscent of full eyeliner and long, defined eyelashes. His expression and demeanor are also noticeably different, exuding a great deal of self-confidence compared to his usual persona.

Civil

Ren Amamiya is a young man of slightly above-average height and a slender to athletic build. He has pale skin and wavy, messy black hair that falls over his eyes. His eyes are gray, though they can vary between dark brown, light brown, black, or red depending on the illustration. He has long eyelashes. Despite his disheveled hair and slightly hunched posture, he always dresses neatly and tastefully.

In most of his civilian attire, he also wears large black sunglasses. It is later revealed that the sunglasses are for aesthetic reasons and to help him maintain a low profile, as he didn't need them before or after his parole. However, when he removes the sunglasses, his eyes are revealed to be piercing and intense.

He is a second-year student transferred to Shujin Academy, where he was placed to continue his studies due to his probationary period for having been falsely accused of assault.
He sacrifices himself to protect another, consequently losing all power and influence in the world. However, beneath his calm exterior lies a Wild Card with an iron will who leads the Phantom Thieves and is capable of exploiting the Metaverse to alter reality. To his comrades, his codename is Joker, and to the residents of the Velvet Room, he is known as the Joker. The protagonist is the leader of the rebel Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group that seeks to change society by touching people's hearts and carrying out illegal thefts.
