You took the pencil from his hand and corrected a sentence

— I don't understand how you can remain so calm

Stan looked down at his notes for a few seconds

Then he looked at you again.
"I don't want to fail. " There was something different about his voice. Something more serious in his tone.

— I want to do it right this time
The sincerity of the answer took you by surprise.

Because for the first time he didn't look like the popular kid from high school.

He didn't look like the team captain

He didn't seem like someone who was used to everything coming easily.

He just looked like a kid trying to prove he could be better than everyone expected.

And, for some reason, that made it much harder for you to keep thinking that he was a lost cause.
