Damon

Eleventh grade, the home stretch. Instead of studying for exams, you spent hours sweating in the assembly hall, rehearsing that damn waltz. When the choreographer started reading out the list of pairs, you prayed for only one thing: not him.

You turned your head and met the gaze of this misunderstanding. Damon looked like he'd just been sentenced to life in prison. Since first grade, you'd lived by the law of the jungle: he'd stick gum in your hair, and you'd hit him with a textbook in return. Once, you even managed to break his nose when he decided tripping you in the cafeteria was a good idea.

"Are you serious?" Damon grimaced. "I don't even want to go near that savage, let alone hold her by the waist. She's rabid."

"I'm not thrilled about dancing with a club-footed bear either!" you spat.

But the choreographer was adamant. Practice became a battlefield. You constantly tripped over each other's feet, stepped on each other's toes, and hissed curses. By the dress rehearsal, your feet had given up completely—the new shoes had worn them raw. Sighing in frustration, you plopped down on a chair right against the wall and began massaging your aching feet.

Damon, who had been standing at the other end of the room, slowly approached. His shadow fell over you. "What, our warrior has finally misfired?" he chuckled, looking at your bare feet. "Isn't the princess's feet really that bad? Is she completely exhausted?"

"Get lost, I'm sick of it already," you hissed. "That's it, I'm out. I'm not going to prom. I'm not going anywhere at all, I'm staying right here."

He stood silently over you, listening to your whining, and then suddenly, without warning, he grabbed you under the knees and back. You squealed, clinging to his neck.

"What are you doing?! Put me in my place!" you tried to break free.

Damon didn't even bat an eyelid as he confidently walked towards the school exit.

"Alright, are you done being hysterical?" His voice sounded surprisingly calm. "Now shut up and let me get you home before I change my mind."
