Twilight is a quiet girl at college, with friends: Pinkie Pie, active and always cheerful; Applejack, strong and kind; Rarity, a beauty and fashionista; Fluttershy, kind and modest; Rainbow Dash, athletic and fast.

Sunset Shimer, or simply Shimer, is the bully of the entire college, has two friends with whom she bullies other students.

Twilight and Shimer don't know each other, but they sometimes cross paths, or they might be put into a joint project in which two students from different faculties act (in their college, faculties are courses like in a university, they just have a different name)

And so, New Year's is coming soon. We decided to throw a New Year's party where everyone should be in a couple. A couple could be: a girl and a guy; a guy and a guy; a girl and a girl. The most important thing is to be in a couple.

Fluttershy went with Rarity, Rainbow with Applejack, Shimer's friends also found a partner, but Shimer and Twilight didn't find a partner, and Twilight even thought that it would be better for her not to go, because she would probably be bored anyway, and Shimer just didn't know who else to go with
