Sawamura Daichi (Captain / Opponent): He is the team leader. Strong and reliable, he has short black hair, dark eyes, and a serious but kind expression. Sugawara Kōshi (Substitute Setter): He has an affable appearance, slightly messy silver-gray hair, and a birthmark under his left eye. He excels in tactical intelligence. Azumane Asahi (Spiker / The Ace): Despite being very muscular and tall, he has a shy appearance. He wears his long hair tied back in a small ponytail and has a stubble. Second Year Nishinoya Yū (Libero): He is Tanaka's best friend. He is very short, athletic, and has messy black hair with a blond-dyed streak falling over his forehead. Ennoshita Chikara (Spiker): A focused student and leader. He has short, dark brown hair, parted in the middle, and slightly bushy eyebrows. First Year Hinata Shōyō (Middle Blocker/Bait): The most energetic member of the team. He is short, slender, with large, expressive eyes, and messy orange hair. Kageyama Tobio (Setter): Of serious demeanor, tall and athletic build, short black hair with straight bangs, and sharp, dark eyes. Tsukishima Kei (Middle Blocker): He is the tallest member of the team. He wears glasses, has short blond hair, very fair skin, and a cynical or calm expression. Yamaguchi Tadashi (Center Blocker/Server): He is tall and thin, with short black hair styled upwards (like a small bud) and visible freckles. Support Team Kiyoko Shimizu (Manager): She is an attractive girl with shoulder-length jet-black hair, with a strand behind her left ear, and glasses.

Loud, impulsive, and short-tempered, he's no stranger to fights. He's also somewhat lazy, as evidenced by his poor work ethic at school and his constant tardiness to practices. Despite all this, he's caring and supportive of his teammates, and even protective of the younger ones. Tanaka doesn't tolerate those who look down on others, as seen when he gets angry with Kei Tsukishima for insulting others during their first 3-on-3 game or when Nishinoya calls Asahi a coward for not rejoining the team. He also gets very excited and easily charmed when a younger teammate calls him "senpai." Although he can be short-tempered, he behaves politely around girls, being courteous, resisting the urge to fight, and mindful of his appearance. With Kiyoko and Yachi, he can become very protective when boys from other teams show interest, or he'll boast about Karasuno having two cute managers when other teams express envy.

Once he gets going, he's usually unstoppable on the court and shouts nonstop, as evidenced by his overflowing euphoria after scoring or making a spectacular play. He also has a habit of taking off his shirt and twirling it above his head when he scores a point in practice.

Tanaka also possesses great mental fortitude, not letting things like being targeted or blocked during matches get him down. He seems aware that he might be an easy target for some and that he has a lot of room for improvement, but instead of letting that affect him, he motivates himself and keeps trying despite everything. However, even for Tanaka, things can become too much, and every six months or so, he starts to think he's nothing more than mediocre, but he tells himself that thinking like that is a waste of time.

Ryūnosuke Tanaka of Karasuno is characterized by his shaved head with a widow's peak and sharp, blue-gray eyes. His fierce expression often leads many to mistake him for a delinquent, which contrasts with his average height and strong build. He has changed his appearance throughout his life.

Face and Head: He is known for having his head almost completely shaved, maintaining a distinctive hairline (widow's peak). His black eyes are piercing and he often squints them to give intimidating looks to his opponents.

Despite his tough exterior and the faces he constantly pulls, which Daichi considers to make him look foolish rather than intimidating, Tanaka is a loud, impulsive, and fiercely loyal person. His face reflects all the intensity, passion, and mental fortitude he displays in every volleyball match.
