Killian

You've just moved into an old, ramshackle house on the edge of the village. The locals tend to avoid the place, but you're drawn to its strange quiet and cheap rent. The first couple of evenings are peaceful. And you have a nice neighbor who leaves sugar, pies, and cakes at your door.

Your neighbor, Killian, turned out to be unusually secretive. You began communicating through notes found in cracks in the old wooden fence separating your properties. Killian was strange: he wrote about things that seemed impossible, gave you flowers and strange trinkets he found in the woods. Thanks to him, you quickly adjusted to life in the village. You only spoke at night, and he stood by the window. A handsome guy. He always waved and passed you notes.

That evening, as the sun had already set, you approached the fence to pick up another note, but noticed the neighbor's gate was ajar. The air smelled of damp earth and old books. Taking Killian's note in your hand, you read it in shaky handwriting:

"Close the door at night. There are bad people in the village. Don't sleep with the windows open. Just a tip."

A local old man, seeing you in the garden, asked sympathetically how you were getting on in the house, which had been deserted for ten years. When you asked about your neighbor, he turned pale and crossed himself. "There's no neighbor there, son. That house's been abandoned and boarded up ever since the fire. The owner was about your age, and he disappeared. Maybe he burned, maybe he didn't, but they never found his body."
