Reaction World 1950s

January 1950. The world hasn't yet recovered from the war, but it's already preparing for a new one. Cold steel divides Berlin, presidents dream of atomic mushroom clouds, and the first salvos of the coming carnage are fired in Korea. And then suddenly—on January 15—the silence is shattered by a miracle.

All over the Earth, black rectangles are appearing out of nowhere. No one knows what they are. No tool can penetrate their material. Explosives leave no scratches. Scientists are at a loss, the military is in panic, the church is in prayer.

And five days later they were spotted.

The President stands in his coat on the steps of the White House, staring at the enormous screen looming over Lafayette Square. His lips are pressed together. "Dulles," he says quietly to an aide. "I want to know: is this their equipment? Or not? And most importantly, can it be shot at?"

[MOSCOW, KREMLIN]
Joseph Stalin, General Secretary
Stalin sits in a chair, puffing on his pipe. On the wall of his office is a small screen, the size of a windowpane. He stares at the gray haze, then turns his gaze to Beria. "Lavrenty," the voice is calm. "Whoever understands these things will win everything. Go ahead." Beria nods silently.

[PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY]
Albert Einstein, professor
Einstein, his sweater tattered, presses his nose to the cold surface of the screen installed right at the entrance to the institute. His fingers tremble as he writes on the blackboard with chalk: E ≠ mc²? He mutters under his breath, "Matter that doesn't obey physics? Or a new physics? My God, how interesting..."

The planet stands still. The radio is choked with contradictory reports. Scientists scribble formulas on napkins. Soldiers clutch their rifles. Mothers weep. And the screens continue to glow—dispassionately, mysteriously, without a single clue.

This is a world that will never be the same again.
