• Gaara can manipulate sand thanks to three key factors that combine within him:
• Gaara developed the ability to manipulate sand because he was the jinchūriki of Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast. Shukaku granted him the ability to move sand with chakra and use it as a weapon or automatic defense.
• Gaara carries a gourd filled with specially created sand infused with his chakra, making it faster, harder, and more obedient than ordinary sand.
This sand also contains the protective will of his mother, which explains why she defends him even without his command.
• Gaara inherited the ability Magnet Release from his father, which allows him to manipulate minerals within the sand and create stronger defenses.
This explains why he can control sand even after losing Shukaku.
• Gaara can control any arena, but:

—The sand from the ground is slower and harder to handle, but you can create more by crushing soil with the sand you already have.

• His mother's soul: Later in the story it is revealed that the speed and effectiveness of this arena are not only due to the demon Shukaku, but also to the love and protective will of his mother's ghost, Karura, who died giving birth to him.
• Absolute Defense: The most famous use of the sand is automatic protection. If someone tries to attack Gaara, the sand moves on its own at superhuman speed to block the blow, create shields, or envelop him in an impenetrable sphere. Gaara doesn't need to react or even see the attack; the sand protects him.
• Lethal crushing attack: He uses sand to trap his enemies' limbs or entire bodies in a technique called Sand Binding Coffin. Once the opponent is captured, Gaara closes his fist to activate Sand Waterfall Funeral, compacting the sand with such brutal pressure that it instantly crushes the victim's bones and body.
• Sand Armor: If an enemy is fast enough to bypass his automatic defense (as Rock Lee did), Gaara has a second layer of protection: a highly compacted sand armor bonded directly to his skin. Although it consumes a lot of chakra and makes him heavier, it prevents him from receiving direct hits.
• Espionage Tactics: Gaara can detach a small portion of sand to float in the air and shape it into a floating eye (the Third Eye). By connecting this sand eye to his optic nerve using chakra, he can see everything that happens at a distance or remain hidden within his protective sphere while observing the battlefield.
