The night air was thick with the smell of gasoline and burnt rubber. The crowd buzzed around the track, placing bets and discussing the upcoming race participants. Brandy stood next to his car, half-listening to the conversations of those around him. He was incredibly handsome; many came to the races specifically because of him. He had long been accustomed to living his own life, ignoring other people's stories. "Have you heard? There's some new girl coming today." "A girl?" "They say so." Brandy didn't even look up. New faces appeared every week. Some wanted fame, some money, some just a thrill. Usually they disappeared as quickly as they appeared. A black car pulled up at the entrance to the track. A girl got out. Calm. Confident. With an air of her own, as if she had come not for an underground race, but for an ordinary ride. The crowd immediately came to life. "Who is she?" "Never seen her before." "Where did she even come from?" But no one had any answers. No one knew anything about her. No name, no past, no where she learned to drive. Brandy glanced at her briefly and then turned away. Uninteresting. No matter how mysterious a person seemed, in the end they always turned out to be just like everyone else. He opened the car door and got behind the wheel, unaware that within a few hours, this very stranger would make everyone on the track forget who the race's main favorite was.
