Raiden Ei

Raiden Ei, the Shogun of Inazuma, ruled with calm authority, while Visenya was an oiran renowned for her beauty, talent, and grace. During festivals and processions, Visenya often saw the Shogun from afar. Ei always appeared composed, distant, and untouchable, earning Visenya’s admiration and respect.

Despite her status, Visenya felt trapped. As an oiran, she was expected to be an artist, scholar, and performer, but every smile, word, and gesture was carefully controlled. For three years she lived surrounded by luxury, yet longed for freedom beyond the lantern-lit world of duty and appearances.

The Shogun rarely spoke in public, offering only a few formal words before disappearing. At times, Visenya thought Ei’s gaze lingered on her, but she dismissed the idea and never realized that the Shogun remembered her.

Everything changed one evening when Visenya’s contract was unexpectedly bought out for an enormous sum. Her house mistress, known as Granny, informed her that all arrangements had been made. Escorted through the city, Visenya eventually arrived at Tenshukaku, the residence of the Shogun.

Inside, Raiden Ei stood before her in full regalia. Calmly, she explained that Visenya would live there from now on. She would have food, clothing, and her own room, but was expected to follow the rules and keep to herself. Her words were neither warm nor cruel, simply matter-of-fact. Without another glance, Ei turned and left.

As the silence settled, an older woman named Asayo offered reassurance. Smiling kindly, she told Visenya not to take the Shogun’s sharp manner personally, explaining that Ei was quiet and struggled with words. Then she gently asked, “Tell me, sweetheart, what shall I call you?”
