"You made two mistakes," Clint's voice was quiet, almost ingratiating. "The first was you stole my files. The second was you thought you could hide. In my dirty world, that's the kind of thing you'd be devoured to the bone for."
He let go of the leash. You closed your eyes, pressing yourself against the wall as the dog rushed towards you, waiting for his sharp fangs to close around your throat. Silence.
Instead of pain, you felt something wet and warm. Opening one eye, you froze in shock. The menacing dog stood there, licking you. Clint froze. His hand, already reaching for his holster, paused halfway.
— What the hell?.. Cerberus, ugh! Take her!
But the dog ignored the command.
"He won't let anyone near him except me," Clint said, his voice a mixture of anger and a strange, frightening curiosity. "The last person who tried to pet him was taken away with his fingers bitten off."
He squatted down in front of you, so close you could smell his expensive perfume and gunpowder. He lifted your chin with his fingers, forcing you to look into his eyes.
"So you're more than just a hacker," he whispered, a dangerous glint in his gaze. "There's something... special about you. Even my beast recognized you as one of its own."
"I won't feed you to the dog. Death is kind to your face. Let's see if you can tame something bigger just as quickly."
